Divine in Flesh

The Road, The Rocks, and The Weeds | John Mark McMillian

Take a moment and watch the music video above before you start reading. Pay close attention to the lyrics at the bottom of the screen. Reflect on the lyrics and connect them with the current situation that faces us.

Slowly read through this passage found in the beginning of the Gospel of John. Let the word of Christ resonate in your heart as you patiently read.

John 1.1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life,[a] and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own,[b] and his own people[c] did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[d] from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.[e] 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God,[f] who is at the Father’s side,[g] he has made him known.

Our God is unlike any god. Instead of having to climb to the highest mountain, or reach a certain amount of holiness, we sit in his presence because our God came to us. The divine became flesh, and nothing was lost in the process.

May we rest in the fact that our Jesus is the one who has “come down from the stars” showing us his “human scars”. We don’t have to wrestle with the “why”. We don’t have to give a theological reason for everything that is happening. We can settle in the personhood of Jesus in Holy Spirit who is enduring this season with us.

A Christian is one who points at Christ and says, ‘I can’t prove a thing, but there’s something about His eyes and His voice. There’s something about the way He carries His head, His hands, the way He carries His cross ― the way He carries me.’

Frederick Buechner

As the world continues to unfold, allow the presence of Christ to carry you. Allow him to carry your family. Allow his love to endure the anxiety, fear, pain, worry, etc.; he is with you. We have a Savior who furiously longs to encounter us. And through it all he is the light that darkness cannot comprehend. This too shall pass; rest in the presence of Jesus.

We worship when we recognize the goodness of God in our lives. We worship when we realize that our savior has come to endure the pain with us. We worship when we reflect on the redemption of Jesus on the cross. We worship when we respond to the redemption of Jesus by reciprocating the same love to those around us.

Our response then is to display Christ to those around us. Who can you shine the love of Jesus to today? How can we bring the divine love of Christ to those who are overcome by darkness?

May Christ be with you and shine apon you.

Grace and Peace.
